STIR/SHAKEN Transit Identity Header Services

Updated

Bandwidth provides Transit Identity Header Services. These features support the passthrough of STIR/SHAKEN signing information for individual calls (“Identity Header”).

Outbound Transit Identity Header Service

This feature allows service providers that are authorized to sign and verify calls using STIR/SHAKEN to use Bandwidth as an Intermediate Service Provider (ISP) in supported regions.

When Bandwidth customers place an outbound call that has previously been signed with a STIR/SHAKEN Identity Header, Bandwidth will pass the Identity Header to the downstream provider in the call flow.

No additional account configuration is needed to enable Outbound Transit Identity Header Service for customers purchasing outbound calling services through Bandwidth.

Inbound Transit Identity Header Service

The Inbound Transit Identity Header Service is an optional feature for Bandwidth to pass the Identity Header from the Originating Service Provider (OSP) to you for inbound calls. Inbound Transit Identity Header Service can be enabled in the Bandwidth App at no additional charge.

The Inbound Transit Identity Header Service is not enabled by default to ensure customers are prepared to process the additional size that may be associated with the Identity Header information, however, we highly encourage customers to enable this feature.

Enabling Transit Identity Header Service

The Transit Identity Header Service settings are configured per Location in the Bandwidth App. To enable this service:

  1. Log in to the Bandwidth App.
  2. In the side navigation bar, click Account and select Locations.
  3. Select the Location and click Voice.
  4. Scroll down to the STIR/SHAKEN section and set the Transit identity header service to On. No additional action or configuration with Bandwidth is required.

Testing Transit Identity Header Service

Note: We recommend testing one Location before enabling it across all Locations.

  1. To begin, create a new test Location in your Bandwidth App account and order a Bandwidth phone number specifically for testing.
  2. Call the test number from another Bandwidth number in your production account (if available). An inbound call from a Bandwidth number using a Bandwidth number will receive the attestation level you assigned and will include the resulting headers.
