Long message best practices
Sending long messages as SMS is a common practice, but it isn’t always ideal due to the risk of carrier blocking or incorrect concatenation. To reduce the likelihood of experiencing these issues, we recommend the following:
- Avoid sending long messages as SMS since they may not be concatenated correctly due to the differences in encoding and variances in what is supported by destination handsets. For more information about SMS limits and concatenation best practices, see this support article.
- If you plan to send a long message as an SMS, please keep in mind the specific carrier guidelines listed below.
- If your message contains 3 or more segments, consider sending it as an MMS using a text file as an attachment.
Guidelines for specific carriers:
- AT&T will reject messages with 10 segments or greater with error code (4)751
- Verizon can't guarantee proper reassembly for messages over 980 characters
