Getting started with the Universal Platform
Once you’ve upgraded to the Universal Platform and set up your Universal Account, you can begin to take full advantage of the new features and improvements. To help you get started, this article will walk you through how to purchase, configure, and provision services on a global phone number. For API instructions, check out our dev docs guide.
Step 1: Review service restrictions and activation requirements
Many countries have service restrictions and activation requirements that must be met before you can obtain a phone number and activate any services. These restrictions vary, so we recommend reviewing them each time you wish to obtain a number in a new country.
Step 2: Purchase a phone number
Before you can activate services on a phone number, you must have one in your account. Use the Bandwidth App to search and order numbers from any of the countries your account is contracted for and where Bandwidth provides coverage.
Step 3: Create a Requirements Package
Create a Requirements Package (RP) to meet the end user validation requirements and then attach it to a phone number. Please note that the requirements can’t be fully met until the RP has been approved by the Bandwidth Compliance Team.
Step 4: Configure Voice
Create a Voice Configuration Package (VCP) to configure voice origination (inbound) settings and routing functionality. This will allow you to activate Voice Services on your number.
Step 5: Configure Messaging
Configure your Messaging settings to use your Bandwidth App numbers for Messaging APIs. For more information, check out our Messaging Quick Start Guide.
Step 6: Configure Emergency Services
Provision Emergency Services directly via the Bandwidth App or programmatically via the Unified Emergency Services Provisioning API.
Step 7: Activate Services
Once you’ve completed all the activation and configuration steps, you can activate services on your phone number. You can reuse some of the above steps for additional number purchases to accelerate and automate service activation in the future.
