How do I import or remove phone numbers for Hosted Messaging?

Hosted Messaging is a service that allows you to enable numbers for messaging without having to port them into your account. It's designed to allow you to send and receive SMS and MMS messages using the Bandwidth platform while leaving the voice service in place with your current carrier or service provider.

After working with your account manager to add Hosted Messaging to your account, your implementation specialist will enable your account during onboarding. 

To use this service, you'll first need to enable at least one location for messaging. Please take a look at our messaging setup guides for instructions:

How do I import phone numbers for Hosted Messaging?

  1. Log into the Bandwidth Dashboard.
  2. In the top navigation bar, click Numbers and select Hosted Services.
  3. Click Import Numbers.
  4. Type or paste the phone numbers you'd like to import.
  5. Select the Sub-account and Location (optional), and click Check Importability.


  1. After the system determines which numbers qualify for importability, click Start Importing
  2. Enter the subscriber information and the service address.
  3. Select the Sub-Account and Location. You may also enter an optional Customer Order ID. 
  4. Click Submit.

How do I remove phone numbers for Hosted Messaging?

  1. In the top navigation bar, click Numbers and select Hosted Services
  2. Select Remove Imported Numbers. 
  3. Type or paste the phone numbers you'd like to remove and enter the Customer Order ID (if you've selected one previously)
  4. Click Remove Numbers.


Note: It's the responsibility of the Bandwidth customer to remove the Hosted Number from their inventory, in order to prevent inadvertent charges for it in the future. Once the customer removes the Hosted Number, we'll send an update to the Numbering Registry administrator to drop that Number from Bandwidth Messaging, since it will no longer be controlled by Bandwidth.
After this, the customer's new Messaging Provider will be responsible for updating the messaging routing on the Number. This is based on the commercial agreement between the Customer, their new Messaging Provider, and the end user.
