How do I establish Automatic Failover for routing inbound calls in case of failure?

What is an Automatic Failover?

If you're concerned with what would happen to your calls if a failure prevented traffic from being routed to your usual inbound call routes, you may set up an Automatic Failover via the Bandwidth Dashboard API using the Final Destination URI attribute.

Bandwidth offers two solutions for this: you can set up an Automatic Failover either on a Location or on a specific phone number. Check out our API instructions on how to do that!

Note: This feature is not available in the Bandwidth Dashboard UI at this time. It can only be inserted via the Bandwidth Dashboard API.

How does it work?

You can add 10 Origination hosts (IPs or DNS hosts) on a Location. When you add the Final Destination URI attribute to a Location, you're essentially setting a phone number into the FINAL route. So, if all PBX routes fail, you can still complete those calls by redirecting them to a cell phone or another line! 

Additionally, we allow customers to add a line feature for call forwarding on a phone number. This option is slightly different though. Call forwarding is a static setting that will redirect all inbound calls to a specific phone number. However, when you add the Final Destination URI attribute to a phone number, it will only redirect via this route if your usual call routes fail.
