What is Port-Out Passcode Protection?

Port-Out Passcode Protection is a self-service feature that adds an extra level of security to your on-net phone numbers and helps prevent unauthorized ports. This feature lets you manage passcodes on behalf of your end users with little to no support needed.

How can I manage Port-Out Passcode Protection?

You can add, update, or remove passcodes on individual phone numbers, as well as easily validate the existing passcodes associated with them, using either the Bandwidth Dashboard or API. If you’d like to add, update, or remove passcodes on multiple phone numbers, you can do that via API or CSV. Your Full Phone Number Details Report will also include a column that shows which of your phone numbers are passcode-protected.

Note: As the underlying provider, Bandwidth reserves the right to override any passcode rejection if you don’t follow the industry port-out guidelines.

How do I add a passcode to a phone number?

To add a passcode to a phone number on an account, perform the following steps:

  1. Log into the Bandwidth Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the Search Telephone Numbers section on the right side of the home page.
  3. Type or paste the phone number into the search field and click Search.
  4. Click the blue telephone number link in the Search Results section. This will take you to the Phone Number Details page.
  5. Once you’re on the Phone Number Details page, please confirm that the phone number is Tier 0. If you attempt to add a passcode on an ineligible number (any number that’s not Tier 0), you’ll receive the following order failure code: Only ON-NET TNs can have Port-Out Passcode.

  1. Scroll down to the Port-Out Passcode section.
  2. Enter a 4-10 character alphanumeric passcode and click Save Passcode.

How do I add passcodes in bulk?

Note: You can add passcodes for up to 5,000 phone numbers at once.

To add passcodes in bulk, perform the following steps:

  1. Log into the Bandwidth Dashboard.
  2. In the top navigation bar, click Numbers and select Upload Line Features.
  3. On the Upload Line Features page, click the download a template .csv file link. This will download the CSV file into your browser.
  4. Click the file to open it.

Note: If you don’t see the file, please make sure your browser is set to allow pop-ups from the Bandwidth Dashboard and try again. If you still can’t locate it, check the Downloads section in your browser or the Downloads folder on your computer.

We know this template may look a bit overwhelming at first, but it’s actually quite simple! Notice there are two headers: the top row represents the feature to update, such as Passcode, while the second row specifies the field, in this case TN Passcode.

To complete the template, perform the following steps:

  1. Erase all example information in rows 3-6 before entering your data.
  2. Under TN (Column A), enter the phone numbers in a 10-digit format, without spaces, parathesis, or dashes.
  3. Under Passcode (Column G), enter the corresponding 4-10 character alphanumeric passcode for each phone number in Column A.
  4. Once you're done, save the file in the .csv format and navigate back to the Upload Line Features page in the Bandwidth Dashboard.
  5. Drop the file into the Choose a .csv file to import field or click Browse to search for it on your computer.
  6. Once you upload the file, click Import to submit it.

Note: All eligible phone numbers listed in the file will be assigned the corresponding passcode(s) you selected. However, if you included any numbers that aren't passcode-eligible (those that aren't Tier 0), you'll receive an error specifying which of those numbers couldn't have the passcode(s) set.

How do I remove passcodes in bulk?

Note: You can remove passcodes for up to 5,000 phone numbers at once.

To remove passcodes in bulk, perform the following steps:

If you've added passcodes in bulk before, you may notice that the process for removing them follows very similar steps. The main difference is that instead of entering passcodes in the Passcode column, you need to enter systemDefault for each phone number that needs to have the passcode removed.

How can I access a list of phone numbers and their passcodes?

The best way to access a list of phone numbers and their associated passcodes is via API. However, you can also use the filter option in the Full Phone Number Details Report to find and look them up in the Bandwidth Dashboard. To do that:

  1. Log into the Bandwidth Dashboard.
  2. Follow the instructions to download the Full Phone Number Details Report.
  3. Once you open the report, filter it to display just the phone numbers with passcodes.
  4. To look up a passcode associated with a phone number, type or paste that number into the Search Telephone Numbers box on the right side of the Bandwidth Dashboard’s homepage.
