Priority Queueing

Gwen Dipert

What’s happening?

We’ve added the ability to control the priority of your messages so that the most important messages are delivered ahead of the rest! With Priority Queueing, you can now flag a message as high priority and bump ahead its spot in your queue.

Note: Priority Queueing is currently available only for short code MMS, short code SMS, 10DLC SMS, and toll-free SMS.

What do I need to know?

A new priority parameter has been added to our API that accepts two values: high and default. For example, if you have a 15-minute queue capacity and your queue is nearly full of default messages, you can send a high priority message. That high priority message will get bumped to the front of the queue and be delivered ~15 minutes ahead of all the others! Messages with a default priority or no priority value specified whatsoever will be treated exactly the same. High priority messages will also still count towards rate limiting.

Note: If your queue is full, even with default messages, and you send over a high priority message, that message will get rejected with an HTTP 429 response and you’ll need to send it again later.

What do I need to do?

Take advantage of this feature by assigning high or default to our new priority parameter in your messages. Check out our dev docs to learn more!
